It's probably safe to say that three Winston Cup records are out of reach: Richard Petty's 200 career victories, his 27-win season of 1967, and his 10 consecutive wins during that 27-win streak. Petty won 27 of the 49 races contested in 1967, races on tracks ranging from 2.7 miles at Riverside, California, to one-fifth mile at Islip, New York. The '67 season opened at Augusta, Georgia, in November of 1966 and ended at Weaverville, North Carolina, exactly 51 weeks later. His winning streak began August 12 at Winston-Salem and went through the October 1 race at North Wilkesboro, about 50 miles to the west of where it had started. In between, Petty and his No. 43 Plymouth won at Columbia, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; Darlington; Hickory, North Carolina; Richmond, Virginia; Beltsville, Maryland; Hillsborough, North Carolina; and Martinsville, Virginia. Columbia, Savannah, Richmond, and Hillsborough were dirt-tracks, the rest asphalt. Except for the 500-mile Labor Day weekend race at Darlington, every race during the streak was on a short track. Petty was the pole-sitter in six of the 10 en route to 19 poles that season.
